FNB Ipad and Smartphone Deal

FNB’s Apple iPad Mini deal is now available from the bank with 500MB of free 3G data every month for 24 months and 5GB of free ADSL data every month.

This offer is available to anyone wishing to open a new FNB personal cheque account before the end of April 2013. The standard account activation and switching requirements, including salary and debit orders switching will apply, to qualify for the benefits.

Kartik Mistry, head of Smart Devices at FNB’s Core Banking Solutions said: “We have noted customers’ requests to include data with our offer. We will deliver the SIM card with the device for customer convenience; the data will also be loaded on activation of the card.”

In addition, FNB is offering a 10% discount on the retail price of the iPad mini and will continue to offer the repayment terms over 24 months with zero additional interest, fees or charges.

“With all the free data every month, customers will be able to do their banking, emailing and social media updates upon activation of the SIM card, at no extra cost. The deal is worth over R5 000 in data and device discounts over the 24 month period”, Mistry said.

The cost of data in South Africa is of great concern and users of social networks are often hesitant to upload images on mobile devices because of the cost. Prepaid data bundles can cost consumers anything from R75 per month to R119.

Samsung Galaxy S5 contracts

Cell C and Vodacom are set to offer the device from R469 per month (on 24 month contracts), with options to “upgrade” the contracts for additional minutes, SMS messages, and/or data.

According to Vodacom and MTN, the Samsung Galaxy S5 supports their Long Term Evolution networks.

As might be expected, the “contract” available from First National Bank (FNB), which is for the device only and no cellular service, comes in the cheapest at R399/month for 24 months.

Vodacom announced last week that it will be the only network in South Africa to offer the “copper gold” colour model of the Galaxy S5 during the first month of its release.

The Huawei Mate S Launched

China’s Huawei Technologies unveiled a new smartphone on Wednesday, taking aim at the high end of the market, which is dominated by Apple and Samsung Electronics.

The Mate S, launched on the sidelines of Europe’s biggest consumer electronics show, IFA, in Berlin, has a 5.5-inch display, a 13 mega pixel rear camera and fingerprint security. Huawei says it is one of the first smartphones to include a Force Touch display, which can distinguish between a light tap and deep press, enabling access to more functions just by pressing harder.

Apple is also expected to introduce iPhones featuring Force Touch technology next week.

Huawei became the world’s third-biggest smartphone company by sales last month, according to research firm Gartner, overtaking Chinese rival Lenovo, and aims to become the first Chinese firm to sell more than 100 million smartphones this year.
